SUMMARY:ADA 30th Anniversary
DESCRIPTION:The Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) became law in 1990. The ADA is a civil rights law that prohibits discrimination against individuals with disabilities in all areas of public life\, including jobs\, schools\, transportation\, and all public and private places that are open to the general public. The purpose of the law is to make sure that people with disabilities have the same rights and opportunities as everyone else. The ADA gives civil rights protections to individuals with disabilities similar to those provided to individuals on the basis of race\, color\, sex\, national origin\, age\, and religion. It guarantees equal opportunity for individuals with disabilities in public accommodations\, employment\, transportation\, state and local government services\, and telecommunications. \nThis year marks the 30th anniversary of the passage of this law. Stay tuned for all the activities we have planned to celebrate this important event.

SUMMARY:Developmental Disability Awareness Month
DESCRIPTION:National Developmental Disabilities Awareness Month is an opportunity to promote respect for people with intellectual and developmental disabilities (I/DD) and to educate others on the spectrum of abilities people with I/DD possess. For example\, some disabilities are visible (a person who uses a wheelchair or crutches to ambulate)\, while other disabilities may not be easily recognized or seen by the eye (cognitive challenges that affect the way a person speaks\, learns\, or interacts with others). \nThis month our goal is to raise awareness about access for people with developmental disabilities to all areas of community life\, as well as awareness to the barriers that people with disabilities still sometimes face in connecting to the communities in which they live.

SUMMARY:ADA 29th Anniversary
DESCRIPTION:The Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) became law in 1990. The ADA is a civil rights law that prohibits discrimination against individuals with disabilities in all areas of public life\, including jobs\, schools\, transportation\, and all public and private places that are open to the general public. The purpose of the law is to make sure that people with disabilities have the same rights and opportunities as everyone else. It guarantees equal opportunity for individuals with disabilities in public accommodations\, employment\, transportation\, state and local government services\, and telecommunications. The ADA is divided into five titles (or sections) that relate to different areas of public life. \nIn 2008\, the Americans with Disabilities Act Amendments Act (ADAAA) was signed into law and became effective on January 1\, 2009. The ADAAA made a number of significant changes to the definition of “disability.” The changes in the definition of disability in the ADAAA apply to all titles of the ADA\, including Title I (employment practices of private employers with 15 or more employees\, state and local governments\, employment agencies\, labor unions\, agents of the employer and joint management labor committees); Title II (programs and activities of state and local government entities); and Title III (private entities that are considered places of public accommodation).

SUMMARY:Olmstead Anniversary
DESCRIPTION:Olmstead v. LC\, is the name of an important civil rights decision for people with disabilities in our country’s history. This 1999 United States Supreme Court decision was based on the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA). The Supreme Court held that people with disabilities have a qualified right to receive state funded supports and services in the community rather than institutions when the following three part test is met: \n\nthe person’s treatment professionals determine that community supports are appropriate;\nthe person does not object to living in the community; and\nthe provision of services in the community would be a reasonable accommodation when balanced with other similarly situated individuals with disabilities.\n\nEven years after this court decision\, many people are still being held in nursing homes who qualify to live in the community. In Texas\, that number is estimated to be 3\,600 people. Disability Rights Texas and other organizations continue to work to identify individuals in this situation and move them to the community.
