Will Texas lawmakers make school safer this session?

“Legislators to consider funding, guards, threat assessments.

Texas lawmakers are confronting the fact that the security mandate they instituted after the Uvalde massacre is not consistently followed.

The Legislature’s chief response to the Robb Elementary shooting was a requirement that districts post an armed security officer at every campus — a rule many schools have been unable to follow because of a lack of money and manpower.”

“…According to state data analyzed by Disability Rights Texas, nearly 18,000 reported threats last school year involved students who received special education services.

Children with disabilities accounted for roughly 1 in 5 total reported threats.

“It can often happen where a student’s disability is misinterpreted as a threat, and then they have to undergo a threat assessment,” said Maia Volk, a fellow with Disability Rights Texas.

The organization is working with Rep. Lacey Hull, R-Houston, on how to create a better assessment process for children with disabilities.”
