Discrimination by Local Transit Systems Triggers Triple Legal Aid Collaboration

BRAZOS COUNTY, TEXAS—When a legal aid attorney learns of injustice, she responds by taking charge and working to remedy the harm. When a case is particularly egregious and the harm evident, a team of legal aid attorneys is often called for.

In a case recently filed in federal court, the team of attorneys involves a collaboration of three legal service providers: Disability Rights Texas (DRTx), Legal Aid of NorthWest Texas, and Lone Star Legal Aid, who are working together to help a man with disabilities gain access to public transportation after being denied transportation services because of a disability discriminatory policy.

“I’ve worked with attorneys Chris McGreal and Rachel Cohen-Miller of DRTx for many years now on cases that have protected and advanced the rights of many people with disabilities,” said Sharon Reynerson of Lone Star Legal Aid. “We’re honored to have been awarded for our collaborative efforts. I find it’s easy to work with other lawyers who not only share your passion but also the workload and keep us all motivated to continue fighting for the rights of our clients.”

Disability Rights Texas (DRTx) is the federally designated legal protection and advocacy agency for people with disabilities in Texas. Its mission is to help people with disabilities understand and exercise their rights under the law, ensuring their full and equal participation in society. Find out more at www.DRTx.org.
