By taking the user step-by-step through the disciplinary process, the DRTx Interactive Discipline Guide helps parents and school districts learn how to correctly apply the requirements of the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA) when disciplining a student with a disability. This guide was developed by Disability Rights Texas (DRTx) and is based on our analysis and review of IDEA statute and regulations, the Texas Education Code, and the Texas Administrative Code.
When using the guide, read each question carefully before you select your answer. Your answer to each question determines what information will follow. Items or phrases that are underlined are links that, when clicked, take you to other sources of information about that topic. You do not have to access these links to complete the program. Also, you can refer to the Discipline Guide Glossary for useful links and comprehensive background information related to this topic.
We hope you find this process a useful tool for understanding and applying a very complex set of requirements. Of course, it is not intended to and does not replace an attorney’s advice or assistance based on your particular situation. You can also contact DRTx for additional information about the disciplinary process for students with disabilities.
