64 million.
That’s how many Americans will be 65 and older in our nation in 2030. And according to a 2024 CDC report, nearly 44 percent of people in this age range have a disability.
Since May is Older Americans Month, it’s a good time to think about what our country’s aging population needs to continue to work, access affordable healthcare, and live as independently as possible in the community.
To ensure older adults can thrive, we’ll need to focus on these key issues:
Health and Wellness
Older adults can face chronic conditions and mobility challenges. A shift from acute care to preventive and age-friendly services is essential. This includes promoting wellness, supporting caregivers, and integrating technology to enhance care delivery.
Financial Security
Many older adults struggle with out-of-pocket healthcare costs, averaging over $6,600 annually. Ensuring access to affordable healthcare and long-term care is crucial for financial stability.
Housing and Community
Many older adults want to age in place, but affordable, accessible housing is limited. Developing age-friendly communities with transportation, social spaces, and supportive services is vital.
Work and Purpose
Older adults bring valuable experience to the workforce. Creating flexible, age-friendly job opportunities and supporting lifelong learning can help them remain engaged and productive.
By addressing these areas, we can build a society where older adults including those with disabilities live with dignity, purpose, and connection.
