You may know that April is Sexual Assault Awareness Month, but did you know that people with disabilities experience sexual assault at alarmingly high rates?
Every person has the fundamental right to live free from violence, coercion, and harm. That’s something DRTx fights for every day. It’s a key reason why agencies like ours exist.
But why are the rates so high among people with disabilities?
Perpetrators are commonly trusted individuals who have regular access and insight into a person’s routines and vulnerabilities. Isolation – like time spent alone in private settings – can increase the risk and create opportunities for abuse.
Also, survivors may face several obstacles to reporting. They might fear retaliation from someone they depend on, worry they won’t be believed due to harmful stereotypes, or feel discouraged by stigma. Inaccessible reporting systems can add another layer of difficulty.
Despite these challenges, reporting abuse is essential. Survivors deserve justice, and accountability helps prevent further harm. Under Texas law, anyone who suspects abuse of an adult with a disability must report it to the Texas Department of Family and Protective Services.
If you are a person with a disability who has experienced sexual assault, help is available.
